Welcome to the 124th edition of the Carnival of the Godless. This month we’ve received quite a few outstanding submissions, presented here for your consideration and enjoyment.

Carnival of the Godless

Carnival of the Godless

Greg Laden writes about “how Abrahamic religious tradition, ingrained in Western society since before its very history began, explains some of the special ways in which we can be so dumb.”

Slaughter a Cow Every 28 Days: How the Bible Ruined Western Society : Greg Laden’s Blog posted at Greg Laden’s Blog.

PhillyChief expounds on why empathy is a reasonable response to the theist’s question,
“what keeps you from just going around killing people?”

How about valuing human life as a fellow human? posted at You Made Me Say It!.

Andrew Bernardin questions what it is that differentiates science from non-science,
suggesting it’s the ability science has to subtract the bogus from our body of knowledge.

Scientific Advance Through Subtraction posted at The Evolving Mind.

Adrian Hayter brings us the humorous BBC story of a group of flying rabbis and questions what they are doing to “fight” swine flu.

Flying rabbis fight swine flu? posted at The Atheist Blogger.

Jennifurret takes us along, in words and pictures, on a trip to the infamous Creation Museum. Enjoy Part 1 here, then follow the links to Parts 2-9.

Creation Museum Part 1 posted at Blag Hag.

Steve Snyder/SocraticGadfly has written an insightful and less than enthusiastic review of Robert Wright’s recently published “The Evolution of God”.

Reviewed: ‘The Evolution of God’ posted at SocraticGadfly.

Paul Fidalgo offers his own review of “The Evolution of God” and also finds many passages with which to disagree.

Book review: ‘The Evolution of God’ – Maddening, brilliant, fascinating, and flawed posted at DC Secularism Examiner.

Creation musuems are getting their fair share of attention and derision this month. Jim Linville presents the second installment of his impressions of the Big Valley Creation Science Museum. The pictures alone make this submission a must read.

Know Yer Nuts! Big Valley Creation Science Museum posted at Dr. Jim’s Thinking Shop & Tea Room.

Skeptico hasn’t been visiting creation musuems but has been giving some deep thought to the ontological argument for the existence of god in his ongoing effort to counter woo. According to the comments on this post, it’s a refreshing and unique examination of the ontological argument.

The Ontological Argument for God posted at Skeptico.

Risto Juola examines the concept of Disprovability, concluding that “disprovability does not confer validity”. He reminds us that “The fact that a question can be phrased in a grammatically correct … sentence doesn’t make it meaningful, or entitle it to our serious attention.”

Disprovability posted at risto.net.

Newbie Atheist submits an article by GoodNewsAtheism posted at The Teapot Atheist in which “the findings of a recent study making its rounds in Christian media reports that people who attend churches with large congregations have more intense, more conservative, and more fundamentalist-literalist beliefs than Christians who attend small churches.”

Brand-name Christianity works posted at The Teapot Atheist.

hall monitor offers a brief comparison of two recent stories in the news and concludes “there is no practical reason to invite religion into a classoom.”

Church and State: Schools Divided posted at DetentionSlip.org.

the chaplain replies to an article written by J.M. Njoroge, an associate apologist at RZIM, Ravi Zacharias International Ministries, entitled, “The New Atheism and Morality”. It’s a well-written point-by-point argument with many of Njoroge’s contentions. Worth reading and contemplating.

Appraising An Apologist’s Apology posted at An Apostate’s Chapel.

John Smith offers us a bit of comic relief with a godless cartoon take on Genesis.

Genesis 1:1 posted at The Blasphemer’s Bible. (John adds, “Not an actual blog, but I thought that a webcomic with a skeptical look at the bible and took it verse by verse was worth bringing to peoples’ attention. It includes links to information refuting what the bible says.”)

Jim Linville asks us to weigh in on whether or not he should attend the Society Of Biblical Literature annual meeting in New Orleans. You’ll enjoy his impressions of the various workshops being offered.

Should Dr. Jim go to the S.B.L. Meeting in New Orleans? posted at Dr. Jim’s Thinking Shop & Tea Room.

Cubik’s Rube doesn’t mean to provide spoilers, but writes a wonderful review/deconstruction of the messages in the movie Horton Hears A Who!

Wotan Hears A Cthulhu! posted at Cubik’s Rube.

While some suggest that trying to organize atheists is akin to herding cats, vjack presents his suggestions to how this might be accomplished, and why it could be of benefit to the godless.

Organizing Atheists: Advancing the Atheist Movement posted at Atheist Revolution.

Neosnowqueen takes an in-depth look at the question “What would make you believe?”, often presented to the godless by theists, and examines how we might approach that query.

Extraordinary Evidence posted at Winter Harvest.

Is there facism down on the farm? Mikkal Travvis presents his case that there is, and lays out how proposed legislation may destroy the small family farmer. While some may argue that this is not a strictly godless topic, I would contend that since the godless are frequently thinking, socially aware individuals, this issue deserves our attention and consideration.

Fascism On The Farm: H.R. 2749 – The Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009 posted at The Truth.

That concludes this edition. Many of our submitters and authors offer RSS feeds for their blogs and can also be followed on Twitter or Facebook. If you enjoyed their submissions to this carnival, consider continuing to follow them.

I’m really stoked to be able to announce that the August 23, 2009 Carnival of the Godless will be hosted right here on Radical Atheist. This is the first time I’ve offered to host the Carnival but I doubt it will be the last. I’ve long enjoyed reading past CotG entries and am excited to finally be involved in bringing them to you.

If you haven’t yet enjoyed an issue of the Carnival, you should head over to Socratic Gadfly and read the entries in the current edition. Different authors present their unique insights on atheism, skepticism, godlessness in society and a host of other topics related to the godless life.

I encourage all of you to submit your own work or other blogger’s posts you’ve read and think should be exposed to a wider audience. Submission is easy using the pre-formatted submission form.

There are only two rules for submissions:

Carnival of the Godless

Carnival of the Godless

1. The post you send in must be from a godless perspective and address something such as godlessness, atheism, church/state separation, the evolution/creation debate, theodicy, philosophy of religion as it relates to godlessness, etc. There is a huge amount of wiggle room in the post subject and we will consider every submission carefully for inclusion.

2. You may only submit one post per carnival. More may be accepted at the host’s discretion. If you submit a post that you really think ought to be included from another blog, and the author of that blog also submits a post, we’ll use their post. This should be considered a great way to get one of your excellent, but (for whatever reason) unknown or underrated posts in front of a potentially huge audience. Grab the bull by the horns!

I know from the comments I’ve received that a large number of thinking individuals are always on the lookout for new blogs to read. The Carnival of the Godless is a great venue for finding new blogs to add to your RSS rotation.

Some great articles are already being submitted and I look forward to reading those submitted in the next two weeks. Please bookmark Radical Atheist and visit again on August 23rd for the 124th edition of the Carnival of the Godless. I guarantee you’ll be enlightened, entertained and challenged.
